Is Dog Training Really Necessary?

Is dog training necessary - tips for training your dog

If you live with a cat, you’ll know that verbal commands are often ignored. You’ve probably adjusted to simply admiring their independence and making space for their needs.

But do you find it as easy to indulge your dog’s behavior, as you might a rambunctious teenager? It’s understandable. Many dog owners will resonate with your love of these four-legged buddies' eager and excitable natures.

However, without training, this might lose its appeal for both you, your family, and your dog. Add an occasional tussle with another dog or complaints from a neighbor and you may soon feel overwhelmed with the chaos. It's for this reason that dog training is not only recommended but necessary too!

Here are some tips and tools for a stress-free, multi-pet and kid-friendly home:

Join a Good Dog Training Program

Did you know that it’s in your dog’s nature as a pack animal to seek direction?

A good dog training program provides the security that comes with knowing what is expected of you and your dog. It creates a feeling of accomplishment and a good working relationship.

In the same way that you thrive on goals, dog training gives your dog an important job to do, and an important goal to reach. Remember, dogs were originally bred to do important work, such as herding sheep, guarding property, and protecting people.  Many dogs today have no important job to do, and this can lead to boredom and neurotic behavior. Think acting out!

Dog Training – Basic Commands

Your puppy can start to learn simple commands from as young as 7 or 8 weeks old. Even for older dogs, it's never too late to start enlisting some basic training techniques. Here are some basic commands that will establish you as the pack leader your dog is looking for:

Heel – it’s important for your dog to learn to walk beside you, on a loose lead, neither pulling ahead nor lagging behind.

No - teaching your dog to respond to this single word can save you a ton of trouble.

Sit - having your dog sit on command is an easy and fundamental aspect of dog training.

Stay - a well-trained dog should remain where you command, so this is also a very important aspect of dog training.

Down - lying down on command is more than just a cute trick – it’s a key component of any successful dog training program.

Create Friendly Boundaries

Well-trained dogs are calm and happy family companions who are welcomed in their neighborhoods. With proper training, you can enjoy their enthusiasm without losing peace of mind, even around young children and cats.

But sometimes, no matter how well trained your dog may be, there are times when you aren’t there to give a command. If certain rooms in your home are off-limits, or designated cat areas, there is a simple way to keep them out when your back is turned.

Door Buddy is an adjustable door strap that keeps dogs (and babies) out of the kitty litter while allowing easy access for you and your cats.

With good boundaries, the bond between you and your dog will become even more pleasurable for both of you. Just remember, when it comes to implementing a dog training program, consistency is key! Stay strong and keep your rules in place.
