RECOGNIZING A SICK PET

It’s imperative to note that different sicknesses present themselves in various ways in our precious pets. For example, take diabetes; your cat or doggo might not suffer from a cough before you figure out something’s wrong. However, here are a few common sick pet symptoms to keep your eye out for.

  • Decrease in or loss of appetite
  • Decrease in energy or activity level
  • Hiding or not participating in regular activities
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Blood in the urine or stool
  • Bloating of the abdomen
  • Straining to do their business
  • Increased shedding or bald patches
  • Excessive scratching or licking of the body
  • Smelly breath, ears, or skin
  • Lumps or tumors
  • Discharge from the eyes or nose
  • Limping
  • Seizures
  • Trouble getting up and down the stairs
  • Abnormal whining or crying

The key to truly recognizing a sick pet is looking out for abnormalities in their behavior. Is your doggo suddenly adamant about licking their paws? Or is your cat looking more solemn? If these symptoms persist, a trip to the vet is a must.

Furthermore, if constant vomiting, bleeding, or seizures continue for longer than a day, don’t delay taking your pet to the nearest vet or emergency clinic.

CARING FOR A SICK PET

The most obvious point in caring for a sick pet is that if you’re anxious about your cat or doggo, your vet will be able to outline the best treatment plan. After all, they’re the professionals, and they will be able to tell you which medication is needed or if your pet needs any special care. With that being said, you can do a few things to make sure your sick dog or sick cat is well looked after.

For starters, hydration is key when it comes to caring for a sick pet. The more hydrated their bodies are, the better they will feel to fight off those terrible nasties. On top of this, you may want to look at their diet. If they’re not up to eating, you may want to consult your vet about how you can ensure your pet is getting enough nutrients. However, offering small portions often is a great strategy.

Next, make sure they’re comfy. There’s nothing better than being spoiled when you’re feeling under the weather. Your pet thinks so too! Snuggle up to your dog or cat and show them how much you care about them. Adding their favorite blankets and cushions is a must also.

Depending on their ailments, keeping them clean should be a top priority. Changing out the litter box or giving their face a good clean can help aid them in their path to recovery. If your pet is having toilet issues, remember to clean their bathroom regularly.

Last but not least, and we can’t repeat this enough, visit your vet if there are any doubts. The last thing you’d want to do is leave your furry friend in a slump for too long. Your vet will be your best call to action and they will advise you on exactly what you need to do when it comes to caring for a sick pet.

The top pet diseases don’t have to be something to fear, but it is always a good idea to be prepared. Keeping up a good diet, getting your pet active regularly, and keeping up with hygiene efforts are fantastic ways to make sure your pet stays healthy.
